I certainly agree that Snopes can be a false authority and their claims need to be verified, because it says so on Snopes!

Many of their articles lack adequate references and are entirely opaque to double-checking (as Sklivvz has noticed himself). Linking to them is in many instances a pure appeal to authority, which worries me.
